What is Diaper Rash?

The term 'Diaper Rash' refers to any rash of the skin area covered by a diaper. Almost every child will experience diaper rash. Diaper rash is usually due to the skin being exposed to heat, moisture, bacteria and ammonia over a prolonged period of time. The irritation in your baby's tender skin is caused by the action of bacteria from bowel movements on certain chemicals in the urine. Bouts of diarrhea cause rashes in most children.

Prevention and Treatment of Diaper Rash!

Change diapers frequently! This is the key to preventing diaper rash. Exposure to stools cause the most damage to your baby's skin. Check your baby's diaper about every hour to see if it is wet or soiled.

Clean the skin properly! Wash your hands before changing your baby's diaper. Rinse your baby's skin with warm water with a patting motion, as not to further damage skin. Do not wash the area with soap at every diaper change, because this could further damage the skin. After bowel movements, gently wash the area with a mild soap (using a patting motion), which will help to remove the bacteria that may be left on the skin. Rinse well with warm water and allow to air dry, if possible; if not, pat dry with a clean towel.

Increase air exposure! Allow your baby's bottom to be unclothed and exposed to the air as much a possible each day. The most convenient times may be during naps. Avoid the use of any type of plastic pants. Punching holes in disposable diapers will allow air to reach the skin.

Apply Happy Hiney! Gently apply Happy Hiney using a patting motion, as not to further damage your baby's tender skin. Happy Hiney will form a protective barrier against wetness, inhibit bacteria growth, promote the healing of damaged skin, and reduce the pain associated with diaper rash.
